Each "Rammit Yourself" workshop covers soil selection and testing; forming walls and corners; installing electricity, plumbing, and window/door block-outs; mixing and tamping the dirt; and stripping forms.
Workshops also include instruction in designing and building with rammed earth, including technical data and supervised hands-on experience constructing a wall.
Curriculum includes:
Participants may bring half-full 5-gallon buckets of any soil they might want to use for building. This will be tamped into regulation-formed cylinders for later testing at soils labs in participant's home towns.

Forming is a critical step in rammed earth construction. Strong, precisely aligned formwork must withstand the intense lateral forces from pneumatic tamping without bulging, shifting, or leaking material. Straight, plumb, and level walls with a consistent thickness sets the foundation for strong, visually striking rammed earth walls that endure a lifetime. Proper forming knowledge is essential for a successful build.
Proper mixing is the foundation step in the creation rammed earth walls, as it ensures a uniform distribution of particle sizes - typically a blend of sand, silt, clay, and sometimes gravel or stabilizers such as Portland cement. Different mixing methods will be covered as well as soil compaction testing which will ensure optimal interlocking, compressive strength, durability, and resistance to erosion.
Proper tamping maximizes wall compressive strength, durability, & load bearing capacity while enhancing its thermal mass for natural temperature regulation and resistance to weathering. Proper tamping techniques eliminate weak & low-density zones, poor inner-layer bonding, delamination, erosion/spalling, and aesthetic issues.
